What was your role?

Our job is to create a mobile companion for the Unadat website. So far, I ported some pages from the Unadat site over to the mobile app and created quick prototypes for the team to test out concepts and see if an element would work as intended. I managed to get the login (a big milestone) to work on the mobile app.

What did you work on?

I work on the app project for Unadat and looked for bugs on the main site.

What was the impact of your project?
Users can now use a mobile app to use Unadat.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
Some things that I learned during my Internship is how to use Google's Cloud Service (Google Cloud) to deploy test versions of the app. I also learned some efficient ways to troubleshoot my laptop using various cmd and bash commands, along with setting up environment path variables in Linux for Android Studio. And lastly I learned a lot about jQuery and php and the role they serve in projects.
What skills have you gained?
N/A
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock I had to overcome was running the Android Studio emulator on my Windows laptop. My laptop was having difficulties running the emulator because the API target kept getting corrupted; among other things. After a week of troubleshooting with my team I decided to install the Ubuntu OS on an VirtualBox. I reinstalled Android Studio on it and used my phone to run the emulator from the VirtualBox. Everything started to work smoothly afterwards. I managed to catch up to my team's progress within a day.
How has company culture guided your work?
The company culture fosters an agile mindset. Throughout our internship, we focused on getting the core components of our project done and evaluated our new goals after getting them done.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
I worked on the App team throughout my internship. We had to start our app development from scratch. The first week we discussed the different technologies we could use to accomplish our goal of creating the Unadat app. By the end of the week we decided to use Capacitor. Capacitor is a cross-platform application that allows HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to be used to make native apps on iOS, Android, and Web. We chose Capacitor because it fit more in line with our team's skill sets. Using Capacitor also meant that we can deploy Android and iOS apps from 1 codebase. In the second week we set up our laptop environment to use Capacitor. This meant installing Node.js and an app emulator (Android Studio). From the third week onward, we elevated the scope of our project and decided who would do what. I created prototypes of our mobile project to test out functions and elements to see if it would work as intended.
What advice would you give to future interns?
- Take your breaks especially when troubleshooting - Keep your team informed on what you are up to, even if it's to ask for help - Read the official documentation of the languages/technologies you are using - Make sure the information you are using is updated
