Patrick Ging

College: Hunter College

Education Level: Freshman

Career Interest: Software Engineering

I go to Hunter College. I’m studying CS. I like Rugby and basketball (although I haven’t been playing those sports too often). I like playing video games as well, although there haven’t been too many titles to come out that have been riveting to me. I used to be a big meme connoisseur, but these days I’ve been a bit out of the loop (I saw the blue lobster meme and had 0 idea what it means). I’d like to go travel Europe a bit more and, as a long term goal, end up working in big tech. Although I program and do a lot of CS, it isn’t the thing I LOVE to do. I am interested in fitness and health (although it may not look like it) and I’m working on getting into better shape.

What was your role?

iPM/CS

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
Chores is a really important part of Unadat. It’s used between between people and is sort of a middle man for communicating between people tasks and responsibilities. It’s as the discord says meant to be able to handle those difficult conversations between people and can really be of good use to parents who may have someone older who may find that conversation demeaning.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
What skills have you gained?
Setting up a scrum and discussing road blocks and story points. I’m learning right now PHP and the style of JavaScript they use. I’ve also learned a lot about how how to think about an app and it’s UI after that first impressions form. I never really thought a lot about how a UI can affect its usability.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
Trying to set up my own repository. For some reason, google console only worked on a particular web browser.
How has company culture guided your work?
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
What advice would you give to future interns?
Discord is a really good tool. Perhaps giving people roles on their position would be really useful because you may not be sure who does what on your team. Additionally ( to interns ) be okay with progressing slowly. The onboarding isn’t meant to rush you, it’s fine to take it slow. I also might mention that pinning comments allows everyone to be able to notice what we need to see (so it would be good for announcements, perhaps using an announcements channel would be good too).
