Matthew LaBarca

College: Hunter College

Education Level: Freshman

Career Interest: Software Engineering

My name is Matthew. I was born and raised on Long Island. In Hicksville to be exact. I lived with my mom, dad, grandma and two brothers. My father is of mostly Italian descent and my mother is of mostly Vietnamese descent. My mom grew up in Vietnam. I’ve been to Vietnam twice to visit my family there. I've played the cello for over 10 years, playing with many orchestras, chamber groups, and solos. I've played a lot of sports over the years, but my favorite is volleyball. I have been a diehard Phoenix Suns fan for 7 years now (and I am hopeful they can win their first championship this year). I'm also a diehard Billy Joel fan, largely because of his talent, his music, and that he went to the same high school as me. Every day, depending on my mood and activity, I listen to lots of different genres of music. My favorite subjects in school were always computer science, math, and music. Now, I go to Hunter College, majoring in Computer Science, and minoring in Business and Music. I am an aspiring Software Engineer. I have been trying to learn more coding in my free time, to round out my computer science skills more. Living in Manhattan has been really exciting, especially having grown up in the suburbs. I have some cool friends and a great girlfriend to support me in my endeavors. Every day, I'm looking for a new adventure every day to better my life for now and for my future. In the future, I hope to just focus on my health and family, and see more of the world.

What was your role?

CS (SWE)

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
On the website, its features make it what it is. My efforts will contribute towards bettering the functionality of the website as well as helping the user have the best experience possible. There are features all around the website, and it could constantly need improving or even maintenance. With my team, we will be able to impact the product by cultivating our ideas of how to maximize the user abilities of the website as well as creating a helpful experience. The more ideas that are being spoken about, always the better. Ultimately, we want to attract the user to continue to use our product and for multiple things. Implementing and improving meaningful, easy-to-use features will help attract the consumer.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
What skills have you gained?
I`ve been picking up new programming languages as I`d hope to: More HTML, PHP, Java script, etc. I`m learning more than I ever have about web development than I ever have as well. And web functionality testing from the assignment and seeking problems out with that was verry helpful in improving my UI/UX analysis skills.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock was trying to set up the google cloud, I tried getting it to work with Dan, but tried a lot of things but I finally got it to work.
How has company culture guided your work?
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
What advice would you give to future interns?
I liked the icebreakers. I want to get to know the interns a little better so that was nice.
