Rebecca Jaffe

College: John Jay of Criminal Justice

Education Level: Senior

Career Interest: Forensic Accountant

My education goal is to get a bachelor's degree in fraud examination and financial sciences because I want to become a forensic accountant. The reason why I want to become a forensic accountant is that I became interested in forensic accounting because it offers a career with the excitement of uncertainty that comes along with investigating white-collar crimes like money laundering, bribery, embezzlement, tax evasion, and fraud. Knowing that I can help to either stop or reduce fraud gives me an exhilarating feeling to keep going toward this career goal. My career goal in becoming a forensic accountant is that I will work in financial crimes and be like a detective who uncovers the truth of where that money goes. I also want diversity in the fraud cases that I would be working on so that I do not work on the same things over and over. Also, I love to travel, and traveling with my family brings me so much joy in my life. I already traveled to 23 US states which include Alaska, and two countries which are Canada and Israel so I want to continue traveling so that I can explore the world and its cultures.

What was your role?

I did research on Amazon third-party vendors, uber and doordash looking at legal contracts and articles on the lawsuits they had to see what these companies are liable for.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
Not sure of the impact of the project maybe it`s for clients to know what these companies are liable for and how they want to legally proceed to move foward.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
What I learned from my teammate on how she summarizes the legal contracts and how she explains them in a way that is not confusing. How she has more ideas without adding extra details.
What skills have you gained?
I have gained more communication skills with the other intern on what we were doing and teamwork skills because we divided up the work that way she is doing one thing and I am doing other things.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock I had to overcome was the way I was doing research because at first I was trying to look at the legal contracts of these companies and I did not know what I was doing and I was about to give up. However, once I looked up articles with lawsuits that these companies it started to make sense of what the company was looking for.
How has company culture guided your work?
The company culture guided me by explaining what needs to get done and they would send articles as guidance saying that this is where I need to start and should be incorporated into the research somehow.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
I did research on Amazon`s third-party vendors, uber and doordash looking at legal contracts and articles on the lawsuits they had to see what these companies are liable for. Doing research was hard at first because I didn`t know what I was looking but eventually It did get easier for me and I was able to find information that fits in with my research. Also, the most challenging part was reading those legal agreements/contracts because these contracts were so long and daunting and it was difficult for me to summarize the information. This is why I used articles because the writers of those articles make it easier for me to read and I understand it a lot better than reading those contracts.
What advice would you give to future interns?
Have more ideas in your when you are doing research about a company. It`s better to have 4 ideas with fewer details than 2 ideas with more details.
