College: Macaulay Honors College At Hunter

Education Level: Junior

Career Interest: UX Design

Hi! My name is Hana Ashraf, and I`m a Junior at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter, majoring in Emerging/Digital Media. My perfect leisurely evening consists of painting and watching a reality tv show with friends. I love to laugh, as many people do, so I`m a big fan of comedy stand-up specials. Especially ones by Hasan Minhaj, Trevor Noah, and John Mulaney. When I was 16, my artwork which consisted of clay sculptures, redesigned t-shirts, and professional photography, was exhibited at MoMA Ps1. My interest in design & research today has stemmed and flourished from this creative & artistic side of me. I`m very proud of my accomplishments thus far and hope to achieve many more.

What was your role?

I worked on implementing a Chores feature on the Unadat Website. This feature allows children to set up fundraisers and complete a set of chores in return for an allowance from their parents/guardians. It helps the children become financially independent and learn the importance of saving money while allowing parents to keep track of their children`s chores and pay them.

What was the impact of your project?

What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
I have learned a lot from my teammates. It`s inspiring to see how hard the software engineers of my team work. When they have a problem, they try to figure it out together, call in Dan, and then accomplish their work. It`s truly inspiring to see something be created through code and makes me want to become a better UX designer and create meaningful designs to guide the software engineers.
What skills have you gained?
Collaboration, expanding your network, active listening.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
Communication; During my time at Unadat it felt overwhelming only having two UX designers on the team however through communicating the issue was resolved and as interns we continued to empower one another.
How has company culture guided your work?
Unadat`s company culture of weekly meetings and using Jira board was definitely very helpful. It ensured me that I was on task and doing meaningful work at all times.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
I worked on implementing a Chores feature on the Unadat Website. This feature allows children to set up fundraisers and complete a set of chores in return for an allowance from their parents/guardians. It helps the children become financially independent and learn the importance of saving money while allowing parents to keep track of their children`s chores and pay them. As a UX Designer, I`m researching user needs, constantly talking to my teammates, and creating mockups to understand the logic behind the features that need to be implemented.
What advice would you give to future interns?
Always communicate your concerns to your teammates. Ask for clarification when needed. If something doesn`t make sense always speak up no matter who is speaking.
