Career Interest: Software Developer

Hello my name is Daniel Lin, I always been interested in computers ever since I was a kid and been playing games since I was in second grade which help spark my interest in Computer Science and Game Development. I currently go to Hunter College to pursue a degree in Computer Science and trying pursue a career as a Software Developer. In the future I do hope to do something with VR and maybe get a career surrounding around that. In my free time I enjoy playing all type of games and I like biking around the city on my free time since I like the view and exploring new areas I never been to before. I also enjoy trying new cuisines from different places, in the future when I have enough money, I hope to travel the world to try all different types of food and explore new areas.

What was your role?

I worked on migrating the website to a mobile app and worked on a navbar for the app and fixed a few of the core features of the app like adding credit cards or mortgages.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
Our project makes it so that all users on the website would be able to have a easier way of accessing the website on their phone. It allows them to easily manage their debt no matter where they are we also made it easier to navigate around since just moving the whole website into a mobile version would be messy, we cleaned it up the navigation of the app was a lot better and so it looked nicer and was easy to move to different areas of the app without much of a problem.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
My teammates has taught me more in depth about the inspect tool like accessing the database to see what type of data was being pushed.
What skills have you gained?
A new skill I picked up during the internship was time management, since we usually had to add some functions before the end of the week we had to make sure we had enough time to work on all the ideas equally so we were able to complete most of them by the end of the week and polish them up by next week.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock I overcame was trying to the run the app on my computer, I had a lot of missing packages to run the app, while trying to download these packages on android studio it didn`t fix my problems so I had to manually look through each packages to find the specific package to download and sometime other packages ruined it for some reason. I had to also change multiple different paths in my computers to make sure it went towards the right folder which finally fixed the problem and allowed me to run the app on my computer.
How has company culture guided your work?
The company culture has help saved me a lot of time since instead of trying to create my own work from scratch, I try searching up resources online that are available for me that I can use to help me aid me with it which help saved a lot of time.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
One of the big project I worked on during the internship was the navbar, first grabbed the navbar from the website itself and moved it to the bottom and began adding extra features the UI/UX team created but I had some issues with the navbar placements so I had some of my peers help me with that.
What advice would you give to future interns?
Some advice I would give to incoming interns would be to be ready to google a lot of stuff especially if you never learned any python before it could be fairly confusing but I was able to figure out a lot of the problems by just googling them and using the inspect tool on the website was a very nice way to find exactly which function I needed to edit and which file it was in. You could also use the inspect tool to find out what data is getting sent to other functions and see if it`s even sending.
