Ahnaf Shamim

College: Queens College

Education Level: Bachelor Degree

Career Interest: Computer Science

I am a current sophomore in Queens College who majors in Computer Science. As a kid I was always on my computer, so when it was time to get my life started, computer science seemed like a very appealing option. In my free time I love watching Anime, hiking or playing some volleyball with friends.

What was your role?

Our team mainly worked on adapting the current code base so it can smoothly work in mobile. There were many bugs on the way that we had to fix. We were able to implement something new, the navbar. I took a big part in doing so, and have it fully functioning.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
I fixed many issues, identified new issues, and suggested things we can work on. I helped my teammates when they needed assistance and helped them improve on their code.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
Considering that we all came from CUNY, and most of us were majoring in CS, I gained a bigger insight in the opportunities or "college hacks" I can do as a CS student.
What skills have you gained?
I gained a better understanding of PHP, its syntax, and how you can utilize it so it communicates with the database. This was my first time also working with SQL Workbench, and google cloud servers. I also familiarized myself on agile development.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
There isn`t truly one single roadblock that I can choose. I would say I learnt how to deal with small roadblocks that kept appearing after I fixed one thing. After getting used to the ongoing chain of bugs, that really isn`t apparent visibly, the way I worked in order to fix that has better improved.
How has company culture guided your work?
Having the ability to talk about any roadblocks without hesitation and with understanding from teams or staff really brought relief and better quality to my work.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
I worked on the navbar. I used what was already available. So I took the main navbar from the top and used what i needed from it. I used css to make sure that the navbar stays neatly in the bottom screen. I added new buttons, and made sure the functionality was working according to what the design team gave us.
What advice would you give to future interns?
Understand your weak points. Coming into this internship I didn`t know any PHP, I had to familiarize myself on it in my own time. If you can identify whats possible for you moving on, you can handle a lot more since you will be better prepared when facing an issue.
