Ryan Hinds

College: New York City College of Technology

Education Level: Senior

Career Interest: Software Engineer

I am currently a college senior hoping to work in the tech field as a software engineer. Unadat was a great place for my first internship. I learned so much and had a great experience.

What was your role?

At Unadat my team and I were responsible for locating potential bugs and finding the best way to get rid of them. We worked on fixing bugs that involved dark mode, user invitations, user debt budgets, and even small user interface changes.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
The impact of our project was that we improved the site usability by eliminating a majority of bugs, making the website easier for users.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
What I`ve learned from my teammates was how to properly work as a team. My team was always helping each other out when we needed it and we would teach each other new stuff if we didn`t know what to do.
What skills have you gained?
While working at Unadat, some new skills I picked up would be git commands and version control, as well as PHP, and agile scrum methods. These skills are all applicable to the work force that I plan to go in, and I am glad I got to learn these things.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock I`ve overcome during this entire internship was fixing an issue with the dashboard that I accidentally created. I accidentally made the dashboard completely white and blank when trying to fix dark mode text somehow, and I still don`t know how this happened because one moment it was fine then I took a break and came back and it was just blank white. I managed to overcome this roadblock by reverting the changes I`ve made and pushing the new set of code.
How has company culture guided your work?
Company culture has guided my work by showing me that it is important to lend a helping hand and to always work as a team.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
Since we were on the quality improvement team there wasn`t really a big project that we had to work on. We mostly fixed bugs.
What advice would you give to future interns?
My advice to the next crop of interns would be to learn PHP if they don`t know it already, and prepare themselves before entering. Study and brush up on a few topics, and if they get stuck don`t be afraid to ask for help.
