Jared Hwee

College: Baruch College

Education Level: Pursuing Bachelors

Career Interest: Data Scientist

My name is Jared Hwee & I’m currently a senior at Baruch College with a goal to become a Data scientist. Prior to my time at Unadat, I was a database intern at the MTA where I learned how to use tools, like Excel and MS Access, to create meaningful reports to executives at the company. In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors—like basketball, handball, hiking— playing video games, and traveling to new places.

What was your role?

I was on the computer science team at Unadat. I would spend my time coding on Google Cloud. At the same time I helped guide the teams goals for the week and lead team discussion.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
The impact that my project will have will mainly allow users to negotiate with parents. This feature will allow children to create their own fundraising story and learn the soft skills of children. This will improve communication between families.
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
Something that I learned from my teammates is how to be a better listener. My team has taught me not to dominate the conversation and allow others a chance to speak and create new ideas that I didn`t think about.
What skills have you gained?
The new skills that I have picked up during my time at Unadat involve: communication, professionalism, PHP, team-planning, managing others, time management, and Google Cloud.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
The biggest roadblock that I had to overcome was learning how to work from home. There are less factors that I can control in my home, making it distracting to do work. Another problem was getting in touch with team members remotely. I found it easier to schedule meetings or have conversations with people in person to be the fastest response and the most fruitful.
How has company culture guided your work?
The company culture placed emphasis on not shutting people`s ideas down. This helped create more designs and get more ideas out and encouraged people to speak. I felt more invited to have an idea that was my own and follow it through.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
The project that we worked on was chores. We first had to come up with a design on what the feature would look like and define the functionality that we wanted it to have. Next we had to create actually show these designs on to the website in the front and back end. Finally, we had to create relationships for parents and children.
What advice would you give to future interns?
My advice to the next crop of interns would be to study ahead of time. I think that studying PHP, JS, JavaScript, HTML,CSS, and SQL will make the learning curve a lot smoother.
