Jessica Flores Olmos

College: Hunter College

Education Level: Junior

Career Interest: DevOps Engineer

My name is Jessica Flores Olmos, and I am a Junior at Hunter College majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Mandarin. I am the middle child in a family of five and I am also the only daughter. I am interested in fashion, music lyrics, and how they intersect in my daily life. I hope to work towards a position that might allow me to apply my interests, skills, and hobbies to learn as much as I can.

What was your role?

I was a Beta Tester that worked on giving the websites landing page a new look.

What did you work on?

What was the impact of your project?
What did you learn or improve on from this internship or from your teammates?
I learned to ask questions for clarity, and check in on my team mates even if I am not a project manager. Becoming comfortable and adapting to the schedules of my teammates taught me to develop a schedule that was consistent and to plan ahead. I was able to become comfortable in my own inputs and value my own opinions.
What skills have you gained?
Unadat allowed me to strengthen some of my skills and taught me to become accustomed to Linear, where tasks, backlog, and roadblocks are declared. It has been a while since I have used something like Linear, therefore its use highlighted its importance and pointed to other vital necessary skills in the field such as communication with my teammates, Sean, Dan, and project managers.
What was the biggest roadblock you've overcome?
My biggest roadblock included developing a functional method for the sub navigation bar that mimics Google Meets landing page. The bolding sometimes would not work and I had to revise it a few times to get it to the final product.
How has company culture guided your work?
When working under a company we often hear about the importance of working in teams. During my time with Unadat, team work was uniquely developed from team to team. For example, on my team we developed a structure that involved asking each other questions if we were confused and then communicating them to other individuals if needed.
What was your experience at Unadat?
What was one big project you worked on during the internship? Can you walk me through the process?
What advice would you give to future interns?
My advice is to communicate progress to your team mates even if it something small. I noticed that celebrating and acknowledging small wins helped me become more comfortable with my teammates and made it easier to reach out to them whenever I was struggling with something.
